Illegal structures destroyed Municipality combats illegal land occupations.

Overstrand Municipality’s Law Enforcement teams demolished 118 illegal structures and 15 extensions that had been built on municipal property without permission between October 2023 and March 2024.

In February, the Anti-Land Invasion Unit received information that people started to clear plots to erect shacks and were able to respond promptly to tackle potential land occupations.

Overstrand Municipality’s Deputy Mayor and MMC for Protection Services, Cllr Lindile Ntsabo, said the demolition process was carried out in a swift and orderly manner, with no reports of violence or resistance from the occupants.

He encourages eligible residents who fall within the qualifying monthly income threshold, to register on the Provincial Housing Database. The Deputy Mayor stated that by following the correct processes to acquire housing is the only solution to building safe communities with the required services and amenities.

To report land invasions on municipal property, the public can contact the 24/7 Municipal Safety and Security number on 028 313 8980 or their nearest police station.
